Note: A typical installation depth is 3–3.5 inches for this rock, which provides good coverage for most applications. Installing at 4 inches can offer added durability and longer-lasting coverage, especially in higher-use areas. Depths less than 3 inches may allow weed barrier or soil to become visible. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: Wide mixed range from 1" to 6", giving a highly natural, varied look with a mix of small filler stones and large statement pieces in every load. Some pieces may fall outside this range as part of the natural mix, and occasional oversized stones larger than 6" can appear in a load.
- Cleanliness: Unwashed material with a presence of fines (typically less than 10-15%). Fines from production, handling and transport are normal. This material can sometimes contain more fines than normal due to processing (~20%).
- Appearance: Smooth, rounded stone featuring a bold blend of charcoal-black and slate-gray as base tones, with cream-tan pieces and rust-gold mottling mixed throughout. Colors deepen and take on a glossy, polished look when wet. Color may vary slightly between loads.
- History: Material has remained generally consistent in size range and color over time. The charcoal-black, slate-gray, and cream-tan blend with rust-gold mottling is typical of this stone, with minor variation between loads as expected with any natural river-tumbled material. Colors tend to appear more muted and matte when dry and become noticeably richer and glossier when wet.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as river rock, mixed cobble, or decorative accent stone.
Olympus River Rock stands out for its dramatic size range — the mix of small and large tumbled stones creates a more natural, boulder-strewn look than our single-size cobbles, making it a favorite for dry creek beds and water features where you want visual variety rather than a uniform appearance. Its rounded, tumbled shape means it's not recommended for driveways or high-traffic surfaces the way our crushed gravels are; it's best suited as a decorative element rather than a structural or compaction material. Worth noting — the dark charcoal stones develop a striking glossy black finish when wet, contrasting sharply against the lighter cream and tan pieces, making it a great choice if you want a decorative feature with strong natural contrast.
