Black Lava Chips
Description
Black Lava Chips are a great choice for flower beds, top dressing gardening, or mixing into planting soil. It is a lightweight yet durable rock sourced from real volcanic activity and has a porous texture that is primarily ⅜". This material improves soil aeration, has excellent drainage and suppresses weeds without decomposing like mulch does. It is overall a very dark black rock with small hints of red.

Note: A typical installation depth is 1.5–2 inches for this rock, which provides good coverage for most applications. Installing at 2.5 inches can offer added durability and longer-lasting coverage, especially in higher-use areas. Depths less than 1.5 inches may allow weed barrier or soil to become visible. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: Primarily ⅜" material. Some pieces may exceed ⅜", and the material will include a higher mix of fines
- Cleanliness: Unwashed material with a moderate presence of fines (typically less than 15%). Fines from production, handling and transport are normal.
- Appearance: Porous fractured black lava rock with a few lighter pieces of red varying throughout. Color may vary slightly between loads.
- History: Size has remained consistent over time. Because of natural mining process some loads can have a higher presence of red mixed in. As always, natural variation is part of the character of the stone.

Lava chips are an excellent choice for gardening and flower beds. It can also be used for decorative landscaping and top dressing. It can have a higher percentage of fines between 10-15% and is not 100% black as it does have some red color mixed into it that gives it depth and character. The amount of red varies depending on the mining process.
