2-4" Black Lava Rock
Description
2-4″ Black Lava Rock is a great choice for decorative ground cover, fire pit fill, and drainage applications thanks to its lightweight, porous structure and deep, matte black color. It's also an excellent choice for residential and commercial xeriscaping projects, where its natural insulating properties help retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth. With its rugged, deeply pitted texture in rich charcoal and black tones, occasionally accented by rust-red undertones, this stone brings a bold, volcanic character that adds striking contrast to any landscape. Whether used as a decorative ground cover, fire feature filler, or drainage material, 2-4″ Black Lava Rock delivers both dramatic texture and lasting performance in virtually any application.
Sizing Note: While this product is graded as 2″–4″, recent loads have been running larger, typically in the 2″–6″ to 2″–7″ range. Customers should expect a mix skewing toward larger, more substantial pieces than the standard grading suggests.

Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for 2-4″ Black Lava Rock
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | ~280 sq ft | Too shallow |
| 2″ | ~140 sq ft | Not recommended |
| 3″ | ~95 sq ft | Minimum depth |
| 3.5″ | ~85 sq ft | Recommended |
| 4″ | ~70 sq ft | Ideal depth |
| 5″ | ~55 sq ft | Usually unnecessary |
| 6″ | ~45 sq ft | Excessive |
Note: Given the current larger sizing trend, a typical installation depth is 4–5 inches to properly bed the larger pieces. Installing at 6 inches can offer added coverage and a fuller look, especially in fire pit or accent applications. Depths less than 4 inches may allow weed barrier or soil to become visible around the larger rocks. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: Graded as 2–4″, though recent production has trended toward larger pieces in the 2–6″ to 2–7″ range (see sizing note above). Material will include some smaller particles as part of the natural mix.
- Cleanliness: Natural volcanic material with minimal fines. Lightweight and porous compared to our crushed granite and sandstone products.
- Appearance: Deeply pitted, porous volcanic rock in matte black and charcoal, with occasional pieces showing rust-red mineral undertones. Unlike our denser gravels, color doesn't shift dramatically when wet, though the surface can take on a slight sheen. Color may vary slightly between loads.
- History: Material has remained generally consistent in color over time, though sizing has trended larger in recent loads (see note above). The black and charcoal base with occasional rust undertones is typical of this stone, with natural variation expected between loads.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as lava rock, volcanic rock, or scoria.
Black Lava is a lightweight, distinctive option that works especially well as ground cover in xeriscaping, fill for gas fire pits and fire features, and drainage layers where weight matters. Its porous, deeply textured surface sets it apart from our crushed gravels and cobbles, and because it's so lightweight, it's easier to move and spread by hand than comparable volumes of denser stone. Worth noting — recent loads have been trending toward larger pieces than the standard 2-4″ grading, so customers wanting smaller, more uniform coverage should ask about current stock before ordering.
