Note: A typical installation depth is 3–3.5 inches for this rock, which provides good coverage for most applications. Installing at 4 inches can offer added durability and longer-lasting coverage, especially in higher-use areas. Depths less than 3 inches may allow weed barrier or soil to become visible. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: Primarily 3/4"–2" material. Some pieces may exceed 2", and the material will include smaller particles and fines as part of the natural mix.
- Cleanliness: Unwashed material with a presence of fines (typically less than 10-15%). Fines from production, handling and transport are normal.
- Appearance: Fractured stone featuring a rich blend of deep blue-gray and charcoal tones with subtle rust and mauve accents. Color may vary slightly between loads.
- History: Size has remained consistent over time, though color can vary more notably than most stones. While loads typically display the deep blue-gray tones shown here, this material occasionally runs red-heavy due to natural shifts in the quarried vein. As always, natural variation is part of the character of the stone.

Royal is one of our favorite options for customers who want something with a little more character. It performs well in driveways and landscapes, but it's worth noting that this stone has more color variability than most — loads can occasionally shift toward heavier red and rust tones. Expect around 10-15% fines, which aids compaction but means it may arrive looking a bit dusty compared to cleaner stones.
