Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for 2-4″ City Creek South Cobble
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | ~300 sq ft | Too shallow |
| 2″ | ~150 sq ft | Not recommended |
| 3″ | ~100 sq ft | Minimum depth |
| 3.5″ | ~90 sq ft | Recommended |
| 4″ | ~80 sq ft | Ideal depth |
| 5″ | ~60 sq ft | Usually unnecessary |
| 6″ | ~50 sq ft | Excessive |
Note: Because this cobble ranges from 2" to 4", a typical installation depth is 4–5 inches to properly bed the larger pieces. Installing at 6 inches can offer added durability and longer-lasting coverage, especially in higher-use areas. Depths less than 4 inches may allow weed barrier or soil to become visible around the larger cobbles. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Sizing: Mixed cobble ranging from 2" to 4", giving a natural, varied look rather than a uniform single size. Some pieces may fall outside this range as part of the natural mix.
- Cleanliness: Washed, smooth river-tumbled material with minimal fines — noticeably cleaner than our crushed/fractured gravels, but can still contain up to 10-15% fines at times.
- Appearance: Smooth, rounded stone featuring an earthy blend of tan, peach, and salmon, with distinctive charcoal-black mottled patches appearing across many of the stones. Colors deepen and take on a glossy, polished look when wet, with the dark mottling becoming even more pronounced. Color may vary slightly between loads.
- History: Material has remained generally consistent in size range and color over time. The tan, peach, and salmon blend with charcoal-black mottling is typical of this stone, with minor variation between loads as expected with any natural river-tumbled material. Colors tend to appear more muted and matte when dry and become noticeably richer and glossier when wet.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as river rock, tumbled cobble, or decorative accent stone.
City Creek South Cobble is a smooth, earthy-toned option that shines in decorative applications — think accent beds, dry creek beds, garden borders, and water feature surrounds. Its rounded, tumbled shape means it's not recommended for driveways or high-traffic surfaces the way our crushed gravels are; it's best suited as a decorative element rather than a structural or compaction material. Worth noting — this stone's charcoal-black mottling creates a lot of natural contrast against the warmer tan and salmon tones, and both intensify after rain, making it a great choice if you want a decorative feature with bold, earthy visual interest.
